Teucheen Wood has now officially re-opened, following its closure due to damage from Storm Éowyn. Fallen trees blocking paths have been cleared and a visual tree assessment has been carried out along the woodland’s paths and boundaries. A big thank you to our Friends of Teucheen Wood for their hard work in the woodland on Saturday! They spent the morning clearing debris created by last month’s Storm Éowyn and tackling fallen limbs blocking entrances and paths. Their work helped kickstart efforts to restore woodland access ahead of more extensive works by our tree surgeon in the coming weeks. We will provide a further update on the woodland once full, proper access is restored.

IDT staff and volunteers conducted a walk-through of Teucheen Wood earlier today to assess it’s condition following the impact of Storm Éowyn. Thankfully everyone is safe following the storm and we did not observe damage to neighbouring properties during this walk. Following work to plant up a hedgerow along Teucheen Wood’s entrance path in February, volunteers have now started on the creation of a wildflower verge. Over the past few weekends, they have been hard at work doing the necessary ground preparation to sow a native mix of wildflower seeds and grasses. Once established, the verge will provide a vibrant habitat and vital food source for local insects (in particular, pollinators like bees and butterflies), birds, and small mammal

Members of our local and wider communities joined forces earlier in the month to plant a row of native hedgerow species as part of efforts to improve habitat connectivity and availability across Inchinnan. Armed with spades and saplings, volunteers planted up over 100-metres of double hedge on the day - comprising of a mix of native hedgerow species including hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple, alder, bird cherry, hazel, dog rose and elder. Teucheen Wood’s snowdrops have flowered - a sure sign that winter is on its way out and warmer days are afoot! Despite their dainty appearance snowdrops are hardy plants and are easily able to withstand the frosty temperatures that come with winter. This is in-part due to the ‘anti-freeze’ proteins in their cells which prevent ice crystals from forming, protecting them from frost damage.

Our Friends of Teucheen Wood were out over the weekend clearing decades of fly-tipped rubbish which have been removed from the woodland during our volunteer sessions. A big thank you to WRC Recycling for kindly donating one of their rubbish skip to help with the clean-up and for their continued support of our volunteer’s hard work! Following one of our weekly woodland sessions in Teucheen Wood, attendee Margaret Tomlinson shared with us this lovely piece she was inspired to write by the sights and sounds of the woodland. Teucheen Wood now has several Tree Sparrow nest boxes which were crafted by Renfrewshire Council’s Youth Climate Change Champions! These boxes will provide winter roosting opportunities for Tree Sparrows while increasing the chance of the boxes being used as nesting sites during next year’s breeding season. Our Friends of Teucheen Wood were hard at work again last weekend! Most of the day was spent raking and cutting the overgrown verges of our woodland entrance path (pictured during summer and after their work this weekend). While elsewhere in the woodland, they were busy repurposing deadwood logs as path borders to better define our main path network and help to keep visitors on the right track. Thanks to our volunteers for their continued hard work in Teucheen Wood!

The Trust has been made aware that the latest communication leaflet regarding Teucheen Wood's tree works was not clear on timescales and scheduling of work, or the actions that the Trust is taking to ensure our community woodland remains safe for all. We apologise for the concern this may have caused to some and we hope this post provides clarity and reassurance. Our Friends of Teucheen Wood were out again last week tackling the last of the woodland’s invasive rhododendron bushes - helping to prevent their spread and creating a healthier woodland where native plants can thrive. We had our Friends of Teucheen Wood volunteer group in the woodland again last weekend helping with some litter removal, rubbish clearance and vegetation maintenance. Teucheen Wood has had years of unmanaged fly tipping/rubbish dumping, prior to being brought into community ownership, which threatens both the wildlife who call Teucheen home and the overall health of the woodland. We had our first Friends of Teucheen Wood session yesterday to help with the removal of invasive Rhododendron poniticum in our woodland. Many thanks to our volunteers who braved the chilly weather to come along. As you can see from the before/after photos, they did a fantastic job with their bowsaws and loppers - making quick work of the rhododendron we were tackling!
